RELEVANCE

In today’s society, there is often pressure to conform to certain standards of behavior, appearance, and success. This pressure can lead individuals to suppress their true selves, in an effort to fit in and gain acceptance from others. However, this conformity can have negative effects on one’s mental health and overall well-being.

When we are not true to ourselves, we may experience feelings of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. We may also struggle to form genuine connections with others, as we are not being authentic in our interactions. By embracing our true selves and being authentic, we can experience greater self-acceptance, confidence, and inner peace.

Moreover, being yourself can inspire others to do the same. When we show up as our authentic selves, we give others permission to do the same. This creates a more diverse and inclusive society, where people feel free to express themselves without fear of judgment or discrimination.

On the other hand, when we conform to societal standards and suppress our true selves, we contribute to a culture of conformity and inauthenticity. This can lead to a lack of creativity, innovation, and diversity in society, as everyone strives to fit into the same mold.

HOW TO BE

Being yourself is not always easy, especially in a society that encourages conformity. However, there are several ways to embrace authenticity and live a life true to who you are.

First and foremost, it is important to know and accept yourself. Take the time to explore your values, beliefs, interests, and passions. Reflect on what truly matters to you and what makes you unique. Embrace your strengths, weaknesses, and quirks, and learn to love yourself for who you are.

Next, practice self-expression. Take the time to express yourself in ways that feel authentic to you. This could involve sharing your thoughts and feelings with others, pursuing hobbies and interests that bring you joy, or dressing in a way that reflects your personality. By expressing yourself authentically, you are honoring your true self and sending a message to the world that you are proud of who you are.

It is also important to set boundaries and stand up for yourself. It can be easy to fall into the trap of people-pleasing and putting others’ needs before our own. However, it is important to prioritize your own well-being and happiness. Learn to say no to things that do not align with your values or bring you joy, and surround yourself with people who support and uplift you.

Lastly, practice self-care. Taking care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally is essential for living authentically. THOUGHTS

This is probably the most important though difficult part in modern society. Being yourself. What does that even mean?

First of all, we have to accept, that there is no such thing as a person, which developed without any influences from others. Our family, friends, society, media and many more are forming us to become “someone”. This is much needed as it transfers norms and values and therefore regulates coherence within groups and society.

But the influence from others can also impregnate your personal development – or let’s call it “blossoming”. You might want to be like someone, just because you admire the person from afar, may it be a instagramer, a youtuber or someone else.

But is that good?

Keep in mind, that this is the very beginning of societal uniformation and loss of diversity. Does that add value? Do you want someone else to determine your way of living? And what is the worst thing, that could happen when being yourself? Rejection? Have in mind, that judgement from a rejecting person is often based on her own insecurities or limited perspective. Cleverness shows in how good you treat people!

So develop your own personality, basing on how you would want to get treated from others, and on the best possible version of yourself. And do not be afraid to live it, as long as it does not harm others but brings value to them. Or to say it with a citation:
