Respect means consideration – it literally translates from latin to “looking back”. Looking back at the other or at yourself and considering their or your circumstance. You show them appreciation for who they are and interact in a regarding way. Based on the concept of reciprocity, you will get the same appreciation id est respect back from the person you are interacting if you behave accordingly.

Respect does have a different expressions depending on the cultural context. However, in any sense it means to see the values of the other individual and interacting in regard of it. At times it can also mean to respect the rules of a place, to greet and interact in a way coherent to customs or else. Important is to look at what is needed in a situation, looking at yourself if you interact coherently but also being aware of your own rules and boundaries.

Can one respect or accept behaviours which are harming others? Is it possible to respect someone who acts in a non-respectful manner? And if not, how far may one go if boundaries are crossed?
