DEFINITION

Personal power is the ability to stay true to oneself, make decisions, and take action in alignment with one’s own values and goals. It is about owning one’s strengths, abilities, and convictions, and using them to create positive change in both personal and social contexts. Personal power is not about dominating others or controlling situations, but rather about harnessing one’s own inner resources to navigate life’s challenges and opportunities with authenticity and integrity.

RELEVANCE

The implications of standing in one’s power are vast and far-reaching. When individuals are able to tap into their personal power and assert themselves confidently and assertively, they are more likely to be respected by others and have their needs and desires met. This can lead to greater levels of self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-worth, as well as increased satisfaction with one’s relationships and overall quality of life.

Furthermore, when individuals stand in their power, they are better able to set boundaries, make decisions, and advocate for themselves and others. This can lead to more equitable and just social systems, as power imbalances and injustices are identified and addressed. By tapping into their personal power, individuals can become agents of positive change in their communities and beyond, working towards a more just, equitable, and peaceful world for all.

HOW TO BE

One key aspect of being powerful is by practicing self-awareness and self-reflection. This involves understanding one’s own strengths, weaknesses, values, and goals, and using this knowledge to inform one’s actions and decisions. By being grounded in self-awareness, individuals can make choices that are aligned with their authentic selves and contribute to their own well-being and the well-being of others.

Another important factor in being powerful is by cultivating empathy and compassion towards oneself and others. By recognising and honouring the humanity and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their background or circumstances, individuals build connections and relationships based on mutual respect and understanding. This can lead to more harmonious and fulfilling interactions, as well as greater collaboration and cooperation towards common goals.

Being powerful also involves taking responsibility for one’s own actions and their impact on others. This means being accountable for one’s choices, apologising for any harm caused, and making amends as needed. By owning up to one’s mistakes and learning from them, individuals can grow and develop as empowered and responsible agents of change.

Furthermore, being powerful in a positive manner involves using one’s influence and resources for the greater good. This includes standing up for justice, equality, and human rights, advocating for marginalized and oppressed communities, and working towards a more inclusive and equitable society. By leveraging one’s power and privilege to uplift others and challenge systemic injustices, individuals can contribute to positive social change and create a more just and compassionate world for all.

Personal power is a valuable and transformative quality that can empower individuals to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and authenticity.

THOUGHTS

Power tends to be connected to negative aspects, for example someone misusing their power, someone in power taking egoistic choices. This is caused by us looking for power to the ones being perceived as the most powerful. However, I want us to change that perspective. Everyone has power. You have power and I have power. Power is in the first instance nothing else than being able to influence something.

And oh boy we have power over so many things. If we look inside – we have the power to change every thought we have, every habit we have, every act of ours. As we are thinking creatures, able of reflect and we can shape how we behave, the choices we make and hence how we show up to ourselves and the world.
